A Soul Session at Forever Changes
Making the best of February 29

Since today, February 29, only occurs once every four years, it had occurred to me several weeks ago that I ought to do something cool or fun. However, once I got home from work, I started to feel like maybe I just wanted to settle in for the night after all.
Fortunately, I pushed through that resistance and drove down to my friend Shawn’s Forever Changes record shop in Phoenixville. Shawn and his DJ friend, the Spin Therapist were dong what they were calling a “Soul Session”, a mini history lesson in soul music from the initial Atlantic soul era of the 1950s through to the reign of Michael Jackson and Prince in the 1980s.
The Soul Session proved to be a great time, with a nice crowd showing up to appreciate the music and vibes. But with the likes of the O’Jays, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the aforementioned MJ and Prince, how could it have been anything less than a stellar time?
So the lesson, beyond the fact that the soul music of the last 70+ is one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon humanity, is that sometimes when you don’t feel like going out, you should go the hell out anyway.
I am certain happy I went out tonight.
