Greg Goes to Sounds of Market
'Dirty Work'. It's no 'Let It Bleed'.

Last Thursday was my good friend Greg’s birthday. More importantly though, last Thursday was the 36th anniversary of the day Greg went to Sounds o’ Market in Center City Philadelphia to buy his very own copy of the Rolling Stones’ brand-new, just-released-that-day album, Dirty Work (Greg’s original copy shown in photo).
I’d like to say I remember the day well, but I don’t. Greg got dressed up in a suit and tie for the trip down to Sounds o’ Market. What I can’t remember is whether or not I accompanied him on the journey via the Broad Street subway from our Temple University dorm down to the venerable record store. If I was with him, I’d venture to say we hit up the Chestnut Street Sounds o’ Market to pick up the red-hot slice of Stones vinyl, but it could have been the 11th and Ludlow location.
If I was with Greg, I’m not sure we lingered downtown that day. There may have been classes to attend but, more importantly, it was time to spin Dirty Work! And, oh what a spin that would have been, as we treated ourselves to a first listen of an album that has subsequently gone down in Stones’ history as “meh, not one of their best. It’s no Let It Bleed.”
