"Have You Heard Arythmics Yet?"

"Weird video. There's a cow in it."

Eurythmics are being inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame tonight.

In June 1983, during the final weeks of my high school career, another guy named Rich asked me, “Have you heard Arythmics yet? You’re the kinda guy who would like them. Weird video. There’s a cow in it”

Rich mispronounced the name, and he may not have mentioned the cow, though I’d like to think he did. Rich was right though: I was the kind of guy who was going to fall hard for Eurythmics.

A month later, I’m at an overnight college orientation. I’m visiting South Street for the first time and Eurythmics are there too, playing the Ripley Music Hall. I’m too young to get in, and don’t even try, but I’m on the verge of something new and fresh and the music of Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart is going to be an integral part of that soundtrack for years to come.

I would eventually see Eurythmics four times, with their 1984 show at the Tower Theater being one of my first college newspaper concert reviews. Toward the end of the show, I was dancing near the stage and I swear Lennox and I locked eyes. I think she peered deep into my soul, but maybe not. Either way, it was cool.
