Mt. Savage Moment, Early 1970s

There is just way too much happening in this photo.

This is the kitchen table at Grandma’s house, circa 1972. Judging from the window, it appears to be nighttime. Quite possibly New Year’s Eve, though there is no longer any clear way of knowing the exact date. In fact, the USA flag glasses could date this photo as late as 1976, the Bicentennial year. I don’t think so though. This scene feels distinctly early-‘70s.

Of course, the people are of primary importance: my aunt Patsy Ann, Grandma, Dad, and Mom. Each of them is captured in an instant of frivolity. It is a goofy moment but it is a perfect moment as well.

This photo isn’t just about the people though, as comforting as it is to see each of them happy in the moment. Practically every object here contains a memory: the cookie jar, the glasses, the orange plastic cup with the white rim, the wooden cabinets, the napkin bin, the clothes my parents are wearing. And though you can’t see it, the bench that Patsy Ann is sitting has become iconic to those of us who sat there.

I have no idea who took this photo or where I was when it was taken. But I am happy to know that this is my family history. I love this photo more than I can say.
