Rich Builds a Rhino in a Laundromat

...it's possible to find inner peace. To be centered, dammit.

Here are the proposed liner notes for my laundromat-themed entry in a 1994 Rhino Records “Build a Rhino” contest, in which the winning entry would be produced as an actual Rhino compilation. Sadly, I did not win.

Music for Laundromats. The laundromat experience can be enhanced when beautiful music is added to the experience. A little beautiful thematic music can make those clothes tumble a lot faster and make the whole experience that much more fun.

This record, Spin Cycle: Music for Laundromats, will turn laundry time into FUN time. From the dulcet tones of the beautiful Chrissie Hynde crooning “Watching the Clothes” to the blues growls of Albert King wailing those “Laundromat Blues”, this album will take you through every emotion and every possible listening experience. You’ll never look at laundry nite the same way again.

Laundromats have taught me something. I’m not sure what yet, but they’ve taught me something. Something about the dignity of hard work and about no matter who you are, you really ought to have some clean underwear. Laundromats have taught me that in the midst of chaos, as anxious patrons swirl around you, screaming expletives at renegade washers, while waving bits of lingerie in the air, even in those times, it’s possible to find inner peace. To be centered, dammit.
